Should the U.S. ratify U.N. treaty on children's rights?
Article Abstract:
The United Nation's Convention on the Rights of the Child has been ratified by 132 countries, but the US has yet to sign due to conservative fears that the charter will conflict with domestic abortion and capital punishment laws. The American Bar Association's interpretation of the charter asserts that few laws would have to be changed if the charter were ratified. And, although Congress urged ratification in 1991, Bush never submitted the treaty for approval. Opponents fear that the treaty would lessen the role of parents. Pres Clinton has been noncommittal about the treaty, but Secretary of State Warren Christopher is considering submitting the convention to the Senate.

Should women be allowed in combat?
Article Abstract:
A burning issue right now in the military establishment is whether to allow female personnel of the US armed forces to be assigned to combat duty. Those in favor of this proposal argue that female personnel should be allowed equal opportunity in choosing their duty assignments since they are willing to accept the responsibilities involved in combat duty. Those who oppose this proposal state that the principal issue involved is not of equal employment opportunity of employment, but that of battle survivability and unit combat effectivity.

Should professional athletes be allowed to participate in the Olympic games?
Article Abstract:
Some people think it is no longer realistic to treat the Olympics as an amateur sporting event, while others believe that professional athletes should stay out of the games. When the modern Olympics games began in 1896, the line between amateurs and professionals was more defined, and furthermore, there was not much professional sport at the time. Some people feel that professional athletes stack the competition too much in their favor, and that the endorsements they carry only add to the commercialization of the games.
