Smart investing: managed funds pitfalls

Article Abstract:

Australia's managed fund industry has grown during the 1990s due to the influx of money and the reliance of private individuals on professional investment managers, but that does not mean the industry is risk free. Many managed funds have not performed well. Performance is particularly low when there is a slump in the market and fund managers must sell premium stocks to meet requests from clients who wish to sell shares. The loss of premium stocks hurt the funds even more. Private individuals must also be wary of hidden costs for their funds.

A review of the performance of some investment fund managers in Australia is presented. Many international share funds have not performed very well in late 2000-early 2001 because of the global effect of a volatile Wall Street.
