Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. (BHP) has joined 34 leading steelmakers to produce a revolutionary steel car body. The ultralight car frame will enable manufacturers to achieve better fuel consumption since the vehicle weight will be reduced. BHP and its partners have spent $28 mil on the project and intend to publicize the results for Holden, Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi.

Era of the mega-merger

The Jun 1998 merger between Daimler Benz and Chrysler is the largest auto industry merger in history. Some insiders predict that the 22 independent car manufacturers may shrink to 6 within a decade. Car makers are experiencing over capacity, more expensive and tough requirements, greater competition, and slimmer profits. Consequently, these developments make mergers appealing.
