Subway Headache: MetroCard Devices Often Need Repairs
Article Abstract:
The New York City subway system may have replaced its beloved tokens with the prepaid MetroCard, but it has added a monumental problem for transit workers and commuters. The vending machines that dispense MetroCards require an average 800 daily repairs for the system's 1,637 machines. Travelers now have a replacement complaint for late trains: d elays caused by malfunctioning machines that deny riders an equal chance to catch their designated subways because they are delayed in getting to the subway platforms. When tokens were discontinued, 45 token booths were closed and 17 more will cease operations in 2004, replaced by automated vending machines. Transit officials blame the problem on machine vandalism while citing the fact that the machines did provide 101 million transactions in 2003.
