Surfing the Rubicon

Article Abstract:

Merrill Lynch's announcement it would offer online trading is comparable to Julius Caesar burning his boats after he crossed the Rubicon. In both instances the point of no return has been reached. Merrill Lynch must offer online trading to compete with other companies such as Charles Schwab and E*Trade. Other traditional brokerage firms will have to follow Merrill Lynch. Traditional brokers, however, will still play an important role in the market place.
