This article describes the 50th anniversary of Australia's Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, one of the world's great engineering accomplishments, which partially diverted eastward flowing rivers in the Australian Alps to irrigate the country's dry interior and provide inexpensive electric power to Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. Relevant points include the role of the project in placing Australia at the forefront of world construction technology.
