Combating infectious diseases: are there limits to medicine's healing power?
Article Abstract:
Infectious diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide and their threat appears to be growing, as evidenced by the current Ebola outbreak in Zaire. While this and other exotic diseases get the most notice, malaria and tuberculosis do most of the killing, with 2 million and 2.7 million per year, respectively. However, rapid travel and changed social and living conditions make it easier for new diseases or newly resistant ones to spread quickly. The medical establishment is not well prepared for the challenge.

Should the rules limiting the FBI's use of wiretaps be loosened to thwart terrorist attacks?
Article Abstract:
A debate over expanding the federal government's right to use wiretaps has resulted from efforts to increase the US' anti-terrorist ability. Supporters of increased powers for the FBI claim that the new laws will provide the FBI with the information it needs to prevent terrorist acts, and that wiretaps will be conducted in a constitutionally sound manner. Opponents claim that electronic surveillance is too easily abused and leads to civil rights violations, much as it did in the 1960s.

Combating terrorism: will proposed legislation be effective?

The Oklahoma City bombing and the bombing of the World Trade Center have led to new laws being touted by the Clinton administration and members of Congress to curb terrorist activity. Some critics of the laws say they go too far in violating individual rights, while others say they do not go far enough. The scope of the various proposals and the debate surrounding them are discussed.
