Take out the trash, and put it ... where?

Article Abstract:

The United State's output of solid waste increased from 88 million tons in 1960 to 217 million tons in 1997. Some landfills are running out of space, and may pose a toxic threat to surrounding communities. Most waste that ends up landfill is composed of recyclable paper and cardboard. Consumers can help the garbage problem by learning what is recyclable, buying goods made from recycled materials, rejecting unnecessary packaging, and reusing things instead of throwing them away.
