Tech giants team to offer ATM-style voting
Article Abstract:
The largest computer software companies in the US are racing to develop electronic voting systems that will replace the outdated systems that use punch cards and paper ballots. Unisys, Dell Computer and Microsoft have announced that they are joining forces to develop an end-to-end electronic system that would enable voters to vote using a smart card that is similar to banking at an ATM. Inernet giant Cisco Systems and Compaq are also working on an electronic voting system that tthey hope to get certified by summer 2001.

Fat substitute olestra eyed as hazardous-waste cleaner
Article Abstract:
Procter and Gamble (P&G) has developed a new olestra-based chemical that the company claims can be used in eliminating pollutants from Superfund sites. P&G has already requested the EPA to put the novel chemical in its list of industrial chemicals. The company is marketing olestra under the Olean brand, and leaves the human body entirely, leaving no fats and calories behind. The fat substitute is used in Fat-Free Pringles and Frito-Lay's WOW! chips.
