P&G plans Ont. layoffs

Article Abstract:

Proctor & Gamble Co. informed 255 of its full-time employees in Canada that 80% of them will be given the option of jobs or early retirement packages, while the other 51 will be laid off. The company also plans to convert its manufacturing facility in Hamilton, Ontario, into a distribution center. The company presently manufactures its soap brands Camay, Ivory and Coast at the plant. Four years earlier, the company upgraded the plant so it can manufacture liquid Ivory, but a spokesman says the decision to stop production there was due to strategic and financial reasons. The move from Hamilton to another North American plant will be undertaken by September 1999, the official says.
