The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) 1998 Carnegie Hall concert in New York was met with subdued reaction compared to other expeditions. New Yorkers are used to many orchestra's coming there, giving them a chance to see pretty much everyone. The SSO played Carnegie Hall before, but this time Edo de Waart, resident conductor, stayed on the podium for the entire program.

No longer poles apart
Article Abstract:
Few Australian paintings are exhibited in the US galleries. However, in 1994, New York's Metropolitan Museum exhibited 27 paintings of Noland's Ned Kelly. In 1995, the Guggenheim exhibited works of 10 Australian artists. Furthermore, the University of Texas in Austin has the Harold E. Mertz Collection, which is a collection of 150 paintings dating back to the 1970s.

This article presents a discussion with author Philip Gourevitch, whose book "We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families" recounts the massacre of Tutsis by Hutus in Rwanda in 1994. Relevant points include that 800,000 people were killed within 100 days and that the so-called world community reacted for the most part with indifference.
