The age of dissent

Article Abstract:

The people who are in 40-somethings are driven to examine and change their relationships and careers but not basic security needs and with a stronger sense of self. According to Vicker-Willis, who is writing a book about how men manage midlife, the old idea of the midlife crisis was all about changing things for the sake of changing, that is the kind of change that may look responsible from the outside but which come form inner focus and inner acknowledgement.

Beyond the Balkanisation of debate

Article Abstract:

Public debate and social criticism should be a constructive process, not one that resorts to name calling and avoids the accomplishments of the person in question. Controversial Australians have recently been appointed to positions of museum art director and television commentator. They should be judged on the manner in which they perform their job, not the debatable reputation which preceded them.

White Australia polity

Article Abstract:

The author discusses Australia's current zero-tolerance policy on asylum-seekers, comparing it to the country's unwillingness to allow Jewish people fleeing Nazi Germany into Australia in 1938. Both political parties cite national security as the reason, but the author believes they are agreeing with populist beliefs in order to win the election for prime minister.
