Plant geneticists at CSIRO in Canberra may have located the gene that controls when a plant will flower. Scientists hope to manipulate the flowering to advance, delay or suppress it. The applications include forcing synchronous flowering on chrysanthemums on Mother's Day to aid the multi-billion dollar international cut-flower industry or to suppress flowering on timber plantations to direct plant energy into wood growth.
