HIC has embarked on a new plan to transform its storehouses of date into information that will provide a clear picture of health patterns in Australia. The company built on the success of a mainframe software product LINC, which was invented by the founder Gil Simpson and was sold to Unisys. JADE is a software application development tool for large companies, containing all the necessary technology to run and build business systems.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) Legislation Amendment bill of 1999 will allow the ASIO to access information stored in personal computers. Attorney-General Daryl Williams said this will not allow the ASIO to interfere with the lawful use of a computer. Civil libertarians are concerned about the lack of checks and balances in the legislation.
