The greatest excitement in the XVI Commonwealth Games to held in Kuala Lumpur may be in Australia's attempt to win more than 100 gold medals. The previous Australian record was 87 out of 182 in Victoria, Canada, in 1994. Australia is strong in almost all the new sports. Of the most competitive events, several will be between Australian teammates; swimming will be a notable example.

Australian Michael Klim won seven medals - four golds - at the World Swimming Championships, in Perth, Australia, in Jan 1998. The competition was marred by an extensive investigation, and disqualification, of several Chinese swimmers for using human growth hormone. Several Australian women also excelled, including Susie O'Neill and Julia Greville.
