An increasing number of Canadians are practicing alternative religions or are not attending organized church services. A 1991 survey found that 12.5% of Canadians have no religious affiliations. However, most of those people do believe in God or have religious beliefs.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi returned to her native Burma in 1988 to lead the opposition. After her party won the July, 1990 elections, she was arrested. Suu Kyi was awarded the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her nonviolent campaign for human rights and democracy.
