The fat-free snack attack: the U.S. government approves a controversial synthetic food oil

The FDA gave its approval to Procter & Gamble Co's synthetic fat substitute Olestra. The company spent $275 million developing Olestra and plans to test market it in snack foods in 1996. Nutritionists warn that Olestra can block absorption of beta-carotene and may cause flatulence and diarrhea.

The prison system: 'cruel and degrading.'(Canada: Special Report)
Article Abstract:
Canadian Justice Louise Arbour issued a report in Apr 1996, that found prisoners at Kingston, Ontario's Prison for Women were subject to cruel and inhumane treatment. The report also criticized the Correctional System of Canada, which led to the resignation of its director, John Edwards.

Prayer power: can patients be cured by the faith of other people?
Article Abstract:
A number of credible studies seem to indicate that patients who are prayed for by relatives or even strangers have higher recovery rates. One 1988 study of 400 heart patients found the prayed-for group had fewer complications and surgeries.
