There are 79 different frequent-flyer programs and many of the plans have complex rules and incentives. Travelers who fly only occasionally should concentrate on one plan and maximize special promotions. Flying in North America is often a better use of mileage than flying internationally.

Canadian airlines are increasingly adapting electronic ticketing services, which allow passengers to buy airline tickets over the phone using their credit card. They simply recite their confirmation number at the gate to gain access to the plane.
