The new professionals
Article Abstract:
Australia's women graduates under the age of 25 have replaced men as the majority in the accounting, medical, business administration, teaching and law professions. However, they are the minority in architecture, computer science and engineering. This trend is attributed to the growing number of highly educated females. Women under 25 also account for lower unemployment and high workforce participation rates than their male counterparts.

IRC blows the whistle
Article Abstract:
The Australian Industrial Relations Commission decided to ban most contract employment in 37 public universities, creating long-term job security for over 10,000 academics and university employees. Most of the contracts will have to be reemployed on a permanent basis beginning Jul 1 1998. Vice-chancellors believe the commission is not acknowledging section 89A of the Howard government's Workplace Relations Act.
