Macedonia faces a crisis from the war in Kosovo. Macedonians constitute approximately half the nation's population, with most of the rest made of Albanians. Yet over 230,000 Kosavar refugees have fled to Macedonia, seriously straining the country's resources. Western governments have promised $252 mil in grants and loans. Taiwan's $2 mil in aid has arrived, but not the promised $44 mil from the US.

The gene rush

The use of the village of Gioi in the Cilento region of Italy as a basis for genetic research is discussed. The advantages of a small gene pool in which to investigate causes of genetic disorders and the views of local residents on the project are explored.
