Fleeing Cuba, Hoping to Soar On New Stage
Article Abstract:
Twenty Cuban ballet dancers have escaped their country in search of a better professional and financial life since Nov. 2002. They have emigrated to Mexico, Spain, the US and Dominican Republic, and left the renowned Ballet Nacional de Cuba because Fidel Castro's government would not let them dance as visitors outside of Cuba. They are among other professionals who have departed their country, such as surgeons, musicians and baseball players, because of political and economic freedom that they seek elsewhere.
