The sky's the limit in NYC real estate
Article Abstract:
The real estate market in New York, NY, is surprising even the most experienced industry observers because of expensive deals, quick sales and very little negotiation. According to a survey conducted by Ralph Ellison LLC, the average price for Manhattan cooperatives and condominiums jumped to $854,704 in 1st qtr 2000, an increase of 42% from $601,801 in the same period in 1999. The city's hot real estate market is attributed to a healthy economy spurred by investors, entertainment and Internet companies.

Precious gems, precarious time
Article Abstract:
The diamond industry in Antwerp, Belgium is under attack, with analysts claiming that perhaps one of every 10 diamonds passing through Antwerp have been illegally mined by rebel armies in Angola, Sierra Leone and Congo during the 1990s. These African rebel armies have allegedly used the diamonds to buy weapons. Analysts also say that US consumers, who represent the world's leading diamond buyers, have unknowingly bought billions of dollars worth of smuggled diamonds during the 1990s.
