The declining prices of oil have complicated the politics and the economy of Iran. With its population of 68 mil, Iran faces internal instability as well as external. Inflation is rising steadily and GDP is expected to contract more than 2% in 1999. Although the election of Mohammed Khatami gave the country a period of economic and political reform, he has spent much of his time battling hardliners and opponents.
