Lamont's performance bouys up industry
Article Abstract:
The UK Chancellor Norman Lamont's 1993 Budget has been approved by most members of the construction industry. Most want further reduction in interest rates. Lamont's announcement of extended public and private joint ventures and committment to infrastructure will improve workloads for contractors. Housebuilders claim that the doubling of the stamp duty threshold to 60,000 pounds sterling will encourage more first-time buyers. The reduction in mortgage interest relief from 25% to 20% will have a negative effect. Value-added tax on fuel will increase the sale of newly-built, energy-efficient homes.
