Thinking will make it so

Article Abstract:

Patients paralyzed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig's disease, can communicate through brain waves, using a thought translation device. Thoughts are electrical signals, and neuroscientists can translate brain waves into action. Patients type messages by amplifying and dampening their brain waves to select letters on a video screen. The system can only type 2 characters per minute, but the idea can be used to allow ALS patients to control light switches or a wheelchair.
