Treating addiction: should the government try a new approach?
Article Abstract:
The poor record of US drug treatment programs at getting hard-core drug users off of drugs has led to calls for new treatment strategies. Proponents of the current system say that the treatments would work if people had access to it and that expanding treatment will pay for itself by reducing crime and dependancy on the government. Others claim that the current programs have proven themselves to be ineffective and that new treatment strategies should be developed or the government should stop wasting taxpayer money on treatment altogether.

Gun-free zones
Article Abstract:
Several laws have been passed to prevent shootings by children and teenagers. An example of these laws is the one passed by Congress in 1990 which decrees the carrying of guns within 1,000 feet from any school as a felony. Initiatives to expand the coverage of the legislation led to the approval of other gun laws in such states as California and Florida. These laws make adults accountable for any shootings committed by children as a result of their keeping guns within their reach.

Aggressive driving: can road designers and police calm motorists down?
Article Abstract:
Aggressive driving has been responsible for two-thirds of the traffic-related deaths in 1996 and communities have called for traffic calming measures such as more severe driving penalties and narrower roads. Issues such as road rage, reckless driving, and tailgating have made the nation's highways and roads dangerous for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. City planners and police are working towards creating more pedestrian-friendly roads and enforcing safe driving laws.
