Two literary Indians

Indian-born novelists Vikram Seth and Salman Rushdie have released new novels in 1999. There are rumors of a feud between the two writers. Seth thinks new Indian writers try to make their plots too complicated, and criticises Salman Rushdie's style of Magic Realism. Some Indians have expressed disappointment that none of the characters in Seth's new novel are Indian.

Writer Nicholas Shakespeare was hired by the estate of Bruce Chatwin to write the official biography of the late travel writer. Shakespeare feared he would discover unflattering things about his subject. He found no Australian Aborigines who objected to Chatwin's book 'The Songlines', which was thought to misrepresent their culture.
