UK: REGIONAL AIRPORTS COULD RELIEVE MAJOR GATEWAYS
Article Abstract:
The Government in the UK is looking at ways of developing regional airports to relieve the cargo freight load that is at present being handled by the southeast's major gateways. The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions say that up to 50% of air freight is generated outside the southeast and would like to see the a reduction in trucked domestic air freight with demand being met more locally. However, environmental factors, night traffic, local responses and location of forwarders who guarantee and consolidate traffic are key issues for companies such as BAA's cargo division and Virgin Cargo.

UK: BAWC ANNOUNCE NEW SERVICES FOR 2001
Article Abstract:
Following improvements in its market image, British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) has announced plans, postponed from 1999, to develop time-definite and other new products and forge partnerships with some 20 major forwarders in mid-2001. The carrier plans to focus on its network strength and hopes to offer an end-to-end service with the possibility of money-back guarantees. BAWC's Heathrow Airport Ascentis cargo centre began handling loose cargo terminating at the airport in December 2000 and is likely to take over road feeder services and loose cargo originating in Ireland and the UK in early 2001.
