UK: NEW CARGO CENTRE BEGINS OPERATIONS
Article Abstract:
Ascentis, British Airways World Cargo's (BAWC) new cargo centre has begun operations at Heathrow Airport, London. The 82,000 sq mt facility, which is capable of handling 800,000 tonnes of freight, is situated next to BAWC's current facility which will be demolished by the end of the year 2000. Ascentis started handling all loose air freight for the Pacific region in mid-November 2000 following successful trials in October and the company hopes to extend this service throughout the network by the beginning of December 2000. BAWC hopes to increase the amount of loose cargo it handles as it is a more lucrative market than unitised freight. With the new Ascentis facility, BAWC aims to turn around the ratio of unitised and loose cargo from the current 65:35 ratio to 35:65. BA is expected to handle 450,000 tonnes of cargo in 2000 while Ascentis has a capacity of 800,000 tonnes and could be extended to 1m tonnes. If BAWC can capitalise on their new facility it could become a major threat to other carriers at Heathrow.
