Waiting for Saddam
Article Abstract:
Israelis are getting gas masks and preparing for the possibility that Saddam Hussein would attack Israel with scud missiles or other types of biological weapons thought to be in his arsenal. Many Israelis were surprised at how unprepared their government was for this standoff. Some government officials and hospitals blame prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his budget cuts which slashed $40 million that had been set aside for protecting the public against biological weapons.

Guy PhilippeE s two-day reign over Port-au-Prince ended with a fifteen-minute meeting with a U.S. Marine Colonel, who asked Guy and his men to lay down their arms. Port-au-Prince, which is firmly under the control of more than 1,000 U.S. Marine infantrymen, might experience instability due to the prevailing poverty, drug trafficking and corruption when the U.S. troops leave the country.

Article Abstract:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat have a chance to make hsitory by cliniching a peace agreement. Netenyahu lunch in Gaza seemed a step forward. However, the appointment of Ariel Sharon as Israeli foreign minister sends mixed messages. Netanyahu may prefer to dealy the process until after the elections.
