Welch underestimated antitrust issue
Article Abstract:
General Electric (GE) CEO Jack Welch has failed to take the much tougher standards of the European antitrust authorities when his company proposed to acquire Honeywell International. European antitrust authorities apply much tougher standards than the US Justice Dept when scrutinizing delas for anti-competitive effects. Regulators in Brussels, Belgium, believe that GE could crowd out Rolls-Royce and Pratt and Whitney if it could capture more of the market by acquiring Honeywell. Thus, GE's argument that the deal allowed it to be more efficient fell on deaf ears.
