Article Abstract:
The National Council on Economic Education surveyed 1,010 adults and 1,085 high school students to determine their knowledge of basic economic principles. The former group achieved a score of 57%, the latter 48%. Only 13 states require their public schools to offer basic economics courses as part of the high school diploma curriculum.

American workers are making little gain in their salaries relative to inflation, and there is widespread job insecurity due to many layoffs between 1989 and 1995. Movable health benefits, employee sharing of profits and worker training could help this dilemma.
