Census Bureau reports indicate that 1.6 million millionaires resided in the US in 1992, while 33.6 million people lived below the official poverty level of $13,921. In 1991, 1.7 million people were added to the list of those living below the poverty level. Examples of people's annual income are included.

The 1995 survey of wage-earners found that the gap between rich and poor is widening, with the top 20% of households accounting for 80% of the wealth. Salaries for male blue-collar workers have been particularly hard-hit, declining 14.6% since 1978. Scores of individual salaries are listed.
