When the brain stops

Article Abstract:

The plight of former Australian cricketer David Hookes, who lay in hospital brain dead has brought the term into sharp focus even though not many people actually know what it means. Being brain dead means that a person's brain stops functioning but his other organs may well be okay and at that point in time doctors normally give up any chance for recovery, barring a miracle, even if the patient is on life support systems.
