More than 1.5 million Canadians were out of work in Jun 1993, making Canada's unemployment rate of 10.5% the highest it has been since the 1982 recession. Structural changes in Canada's economy during the 1980s eliminated many high-paying jobs and burdened the social-welfare system in the 1990s.

All in the family; heart disease can be inherited

Biochemist Carl Breckenridge's research indicates that one of the largest genetically-inherited causes of heart disease is lipoproteins. Lipoproteins transport cholesterol, and high concentrations of the substance can increase cholesterol concentrations past safe levels.
