Wireless phones tap into Web
Article Abstract:
Sprint PCS and Lucent Technologies are set to introduce wireless phones with high-speed connections to the Internet. In June 1999, Sprint PCS will provide Internet access at 14.4 kilobits per second over its nationwide wireless network. Meanwhile, Lucent Technologies will test a wireless system that would give users Internet access at 144 kps. Other companies, such as US West and Qualcomm, will conduct a similar test in April 1999. The technology is believed to be a precursor for the development of a single global standard for the use of wireless phones anywhere in the world.
