Is There (Enough) Life after the Tax Season?
Article Abstract:
Competition among public accountants is increasing. Price-sensitive services such as tax work, compilations or audit reports undermine the price structure. Unique services can enhance the profitability of the firm. Value billing services need to be: 1) performed in months other than the tax season, 2) not price sensitive and 3) rendered to the firm's existing customers. New services offered to current clients can include: 1) personal financial statements, 2) estate planning, 3) planning meetings to discuss tax projections, growth plans, cash flows, computers and other services of interest to the client, 4) current-year tax projections, 5) tax research for financial planning, 6) trend analysis reports, 7) evaluations of the business, 8) company manuals for accounting, quality control and office management, 9) money management for professionals, 10) computer services and 11) legal support services such as bankruptcy, domestic relations or estate controversies. Other possibilities might include executive search, tax planning for executives or assisting clients when they must go before government agencies. Marketing these services for the client through fliers, newsletters, articles or personal meetings is essential to growth in the firm. The accountant's professional skills are more extensive than tax preparations.

The economics of ordering inventory
Article Abstract:
A balanced policy towards ordering supplies may make economic sense for small businesses such as dental practices. Two calculations based on three cost factors can help determine appropriate order sizes and whether a discount on a particular order size is truly cheaper. Cost factors include purchase price, the cost to store the product, and paid personnel time to place the order. These calculations can be incorporated into the office's financial software and used when placing orders.
