Excessive shrimp farming is devastating ecologies all over the world. Farming activities in countries such as Ecuador and Bangladesh involve the violent removal of mangrove roots from coastal areas, causing untold damage to the environment. Shrimp is an increasingly popular food. The United Nations and environmental activist group Greenpeace are encouraging governments to restrain shrimp industry growth.

The performances of major investment companies have been mixed, but their popularity has been high. Managers of older investment companies hold or buy mostly solid industrials. Established companies with sustained growth records can trade at prices that are above their asset backing. Closed-end investment companies are also being driven by their asset values.

The proposed shipment of Chinese art from the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art set off a massive public protest. The transport was delayed and much of the art, which China claims was stolen from the mainland by Chiang Kai-shek, was left in Taipei.
