Longer lifespan new caregiving challenge: there may be from 200,000 to 500,000 people 60 and older with mental retardation

Both aging parents and children with developmental diseases are enjoying longer lives which increases the pressure on caregivers. People may also start their aging process earlier. People with developmental disabilities such as autism, or cerebral palsy, do much better if cared for at home.

Both the United Nations and the American Assn of Retired Persons will observe International Day for the Elderly on Oct 1, 1993. There are in excess of 342 million people worldwide who are over 65-years-of-age, with the number expected to more than double by the year 2020.
