Computer software programs that help investors evaluate companies do not take all the homework out of investing. Investors can use software to help follow price movements or recognize technical indicators, or oscillators, that often identify trends not readily apparent. But investors will still need to understand basic dynamics of the sharemarket and make the final decision to buy or not to buy.

Fund managers put to the test

Personal Investment surveyed the top 10 fund managers by fund size and Web sites and evaluated them for content, functionality, design, and technical factors. BT provided the best site. Commonwealth Investment Service's web site seems to refer investors to advisers, rather than provide information and an on-line experience. Others are also ranked in the article.

Anecdotal data suggests franchised companies have a greater chance of success because the business is linked with to a strong image, a proven system and purchasing power.
