A new era dawns
Article Abstract:
American Electric Power Co., the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Westinghouse has launched in June 1998 the first unified power flow controller (UPFC) station. The device, which is the fruit of research and development by EPRI, Westinghouse and other institutions, is considered to spark a revolution in the electric power business. The effect of the installation is small considering the huge interconnected US transmission system, but it reflects the start of a fresh approach to transmission. The device allows transmission line operators to for the first direct the flow of huge volumes of power over specified transmission paths instead of allowing the power find its own way.

Turnine control system ups accuracy in Georgia
Article Abstract:
Georgia Power Co.'s Wansley Electric Generating Plant in west Georgia uses GE's Speedtronic Mark V TMR steam turbine control system that offers all the data power plant operators require and is fully integratable with DCS systems. Before, every one of the boiler feedpump turbines (BFPT) serving the plant's Unit 42 large steam turbine generator was controlled by a mechanical/hydraulic system dating from the plant's start. With the Mark V, higher levels of reliability and availability for the BFPTs than the old system was achieved. The system also enables both BFPTs to be controlled out of a single control cabinet, cutting the control component count and costs.
