A chance meeting
Article Abstract:
The famous meeting between American reporter Henry Stanley and Dr David Livingstone in Central Africa during Nov 1871 almost did not happen. Livingstone had only returned to the town of Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika two weeks before Stanley's arrival there. Livingstone had spent the previous two years in Manyuema, where he antagonized Arab slavers and narrowly escaped death by ambush just prior to his return to Ujiji. The two men became fast friends during the four months they remained together. Upon Livingstone's death in 1873, Stanley took up his search for the source of the Nile.

Death in the Arctic
Article Abstract:
More sites have been discovered for the remains of Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition to the Canadian Arctic. Two ships were abandoned in ice and the entire expedition of 129 men died eventually. However, 105 crew members trekked across King William Island and the Adelaide Peninsula for two years, occasionally encountering Inuit Indians who spoke of them to later rescue expeditions. A personal account of tracing the failed expedition is presented.
