Article Abstract:
The Edison Electric Institute gave the 1998 Common Goals awards to five electric companies who have outstanding associations with their clients as well as promote and utilize electric utilities programs. The Pennsylvania Power & Light Co was distinguished for its exemplary Community Partnership Program which had spurred the development of small businesses and the improvement of reasonably-priced housing projects in central and eastern Pennsylvania. South African-based ESKOM was given the International Affiliate award. Other awardees were the Northern States Power Co, Alliant Utilities/IES Utilities, and Houston Lighting and Power.

Common goals are business goals
Article Abstract:
The Edison Electric Institute's Common Goals Awards were given to six electric utilities in recognition of their efforts to foster closer ties with the communities which they serve. The six programs were Tucson Electric Power's drunken driving information campaign, Western Resources' Power Technology Center, SCANA Corp.'s adult literacy program and Portland General Electric's City Life housing project, Korea Electric Power's community support program and Georgia Power's Shenandoah Environment and Education Center.

Emergency response awards
Article Abstract:
The Edison Electric Institute's "Emergency Response Award" is given to Alabama Power, Progress Energy, Florida Power & Light Company, Gulf Power Company and Tampa Electric Company. The award recognizes their swiftness in restoring normal electric supply after the hurricanes in Florida and the Gulf Coast.
