Fear, fury and deforestation
Article Abstract:
The northeastern region of India that includes Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Assam suffers grievously from illegal logging of its teak forests, devastating much of the economy and environment to profit criminals and corrupt politicians. The area, composed of seven states, was long closed to outsiders, with the benefits of protection for natural resources and low immigration. Now the government promotes tourism, which encourages outsiders to come and facilitates illegal logging. Assam's famed tea plantations suffer particularly heavily.

Logging destruction
Article Abstract:
Logging operations continue in southern Siberia's taiga, threatening the economy of the native Udege tribe and the few remaining Siberian tigers. The Russian Supreme Court had ruled the operations violated indigenous peoples' lands. However, evidence indicates illegal logging is taking place. The Udege may be able to combat the illegal activity by using a donated Range Rover vehicle to patrol their land.

The hungry desert
Article Abstract:
The exploration of interior Australia was difficult for British explorers, who were constantly faced with the scarcity of food and water. Explorers recorded how every part of a camel could be used for food, but they neglected to observe what the Aborigines ate in order to survive. The British disdain for the Aboriginal diet was a mistake that often left many explorers close to starvation.
