In the mists of time
Article Abstract:
The Aleut natives on Alaska's Pribilof islands harvest the seal herds through controlled killing of the young adult male seals. The natives, who live mostly on St. George and St. Paul islands, are trying to meld their traditions with American influences, but wildlife control is one area where the two cultures may clash. The natives have operated autonomously since the early 1980s, as fishing has become a major industry.
