The streets of Santiago
Article Abstract:
The Chilean capital city Santiago thrives in 1996 at the center of the country's economic resurgence, dispelling the image created in a bloody 1973 coup. Social and economic problems still belie the activity of its commercial center, however, and problems of smog and urban sprawl detract from, and are compounded by, its spectacular location hard against the 6000 meter Andes mountains. Efforts to confront these problems are finally paying off in cleaner air and improved confidence.
