Into the ghastly blank
Article Abstract:
Explorers set out to map the Australian interior in the mid-19th century. Edward Eyre launched the first of three expeditions in 1840, but the harsh, dry terrain frustrated his efforts. Then in 1845 Charles Sturt hoped to discover an inland sea but found the Simpson Desert instead. In 1859 Charles McDouall Stuart set out on the first of three expeditions, finally reaching the North Coast on Jul 24, 1862. Stuart's route proved useful in the settlement of Australia. The more successful explorers tended to be those who cultivated good relations with the Aborigines.

On humpback through the outback
Article Abstract:
Australia ferocious desert called the Outback is best navigated by camel, as proved by camel renter and trainer Noah Fullerton. Approximately 100,000 camels live in the wilds of Australia's desert terrain, and are perfectly suited to travel the barren and dusty Outback. They were brought to Australia in 1860 by explorers and early settlers who found oxen and horses would perish in the parching heat. After the first steam trains began travelling over the country, many camels were abandoned in the desert, and have created large roaming herds.

Riddles in the sand
Article Abstract:
The story of the ill-fated 1860 expedition by Robert O'Hara Burke and William Wills has become legend in Australia, with many of the facts in dispute. Only one man survived the trek into the hinterland that had been previously unknown to whites. Recent research sheds light on the mystery of their exact route and the burial place of fellow explorer Charles Gray.
