Letting it sink in
Article Abstract:
The problems of deforestation and soil erosion were demonstrated to 23 secondary-school teachers on the Seychelles islands using simple, inexpensive equipment. Seepage rates for a fixed amount of water were recorded in various sites in a nature reserve and the data applied to hypotheses such as the effects of gradient or vegetation on infiltration rates. All of the measurements were made with readily available technology such as light meters, thermometers and clinometers and delivered results remarkably close to those established by laboratory analysis.
