Nomads on the Net

Article Abstract:

Mongolia was permanently linked to the Internet in Jan 1996, thanks to the Pan Asia Networking (PAN) project developed by the International Development Research Centre, a Canadian research organization. PAN helps construct Internet infrastructures in developing Asian nations that currently lack necessary communication systems. PAN awards funds to existing communication organizations to finance Internet sites that can eventually be connected to form regional networks. Mongolia was chosen as PAN's pilot project. PAN has begun additional projects in Vietnam, Cambodia, the Maldives, Laos and Sri Lanka.

World on the line

Article Abstract:

The global telephone network has been developing at a rapid pace and so there has not been enough time to appreciate its impact. The London-based International Institute of Communications is conducting surveys to study the patterns of this development. US, Germany and Japan have emerged as centres of this network. International telephone networks increase the vulnerability of developing communities even while helping the world get closer. Insecurity can drive people to religious or national fanaticism. An understanding of today's telegeography should include an awareness of its drawbacks.
