Out of the cold: utility markets are realizing the promise of superconductors
Article Abstract:
The electric utility industry has shown renewed interest in ceramics-based high-temperature superconductors in response to demands for more efficient power systems, improved power quality and increased capacity. Superconductors were first considered for electric power grid applications after these were discovered during the late 1980s. However, the enthusiasm for superconductors dampened when its was realized that the brittleness of ceramics would make it difficult to turn them into flexible wires.
